Carrying Conceled Weapons
Concealed Pistol License applications are available from your local police department, Oakland County Sheriff's Office, or the Oakland County Clerk's Office. Complete laws and application information are also available through the Michigan State Police website.
All applications must be submitted to the Oakland County Clerk's Office. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Please note our busiest hours are between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.) Contact us.
If you are a new applicant or your most recent license expired before July 1, 2004, you must complete a Pistol Safety Training course. Effective October 1, 2004, the Pistol Safety Training certificate must state "This course complies with Section 5j of 1927 PA 372" and "the individual has successfully completed the course". The Pistol Safety Training certificate must also contain the printed name and signature of the course instructor. If the certificate was issued before October 1, 2004, it must state "PA 381 of 2000" and/or "PA 719 of 2002".
Renewal applicants must certify (on line #12 of the application), that he/she has completed at least three hours of course review and at least one hour of firing range time within the last six months.
Submit your completed Concealed Pistol License application (file size 210k) along with:
- Passport-quality photograph (which may be obtained at time of application for a $10.00 fee)
- Pistol Safety Training certificate (if applicable)
- $105.00 (new or renewal permits are the same fee) payable in cash, MasterCard, Visa or personal check
Once you have submitted and paid for the application, you will proceed to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office - Records Bureau for fingerprinting. Fingerprinting is available Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The approval time for a Concealed Pistol License is approximately 2-3 months. Your license will be sent to you by regular mail. All Concealed Pistol Licenses are issued for a 5-year period.
